West Point, N.Y. - The 2008 Patriot League Women's Tennis Championship is officially underway, as four teams took to the court at Army's Malek Tennis Center for the quarterfinal match-ups. In the day's first quarterfinal, No. 4 seed Lehigh defeated No. 5 seed Holy Cross, while No. 3 Colgate defeated No. 6 Lafayette in the second match.

It was a gorgeous sun-drenched Friday afternoon in West Point, as fans, coaches and student-athletes alike were privy to an excellent day for Patriot League tennis action. No. 4 Lehigh and No. 5 Holy Cross got things started on quarterfinal Friday, and it was the Mountain Hawks who prevailed with a 7-0 victory. Picking up singles victories for the Mountain Hawks were Allison Schwartz, Ariela Cohen, Julie Arthofer, Ruthie Furman, Victoria Vityuk and Stacey Reich. Doubles victories went to the duo of Schwartz-Furman and the pair of Cohen-Reich. Holy Cross also recorded one doubles victory, as Melanie Brown and Ivette Konopka pulled off an 8-3 win in the No. 3 position. Holy Cross finishes the season with a record of 6-7 overall, while the Mountain Hawks will move on to tomorrow's semifinal against top-seeded Army.

In the afternoon's second match, it was Colgate who pulled off the sweep as they defeated Lafayette by a score of 5-0. The Raiders got the upper-hand right off the bat as they swept the doubles matches by scores of 8-5, 8-3 and 8-1. In the singles competition, only four of the matches were completed, as Colgate picked up the four points necessary for a victory. Singles victories were picked up by Samantha Inacker, Isabel Riemer, Erin Fenn and Stephanie Bender. Colgate's Elise DeRose, who played in the No. 1 position, was ahead in the second set of her match when play was called, while Lafayette's Rachel Rohinsky, who plays in the No. 4 slot, was ahead in the third set of her match when play was called. Lafayette finishes the season with an overall record of 5-7, while the Raiders advance to take on No. 2 Bucknell tomorrow afternoon.
