Patriot League Tennis Release - 5.2.07

For the second month in a row a male Navy student-athlete and a female Army student-athlete have earned Patriot League monthly awards. Navy's Ramsey Lemaich was named Patriot League Male Player of the Month, while Army's Niki Flach was honored as the Patriot League Female Player of the Month.

Male Tennis Player of the Month
Ramsey Lemaich, Navy Fr., Danville, Calif.

Lemaich recorded the winning point in both of Navy's Patriot League Tournament victories, leading the Mids to the 2007 championship title. The 2007 Patriot League Rookie of the Year was a combined 10-0 in April, including an 8-0 mark against Patriot League opponents. At the Patriot League Tournament he posted a 4-0 mark.

Female Tennis Player of the Month
Niki Flach, Army So., Naples, Fla.

Flach went 4-1 in singles action and 5-0 in doubles play, both at the No. 1 spot, for the month of April. The sophomore Black Knight tied the Army record for consecutive doubles victories with an active streak of 13. She was also named Co-Most Valuable Player at the Patriot League Women's Tennis Tournament for leading Army to its third-straight championship title. The 2006 Patriot League Rookie of the Year went 4-0 at the Patriot League Tournament.

Patriot League Academies Head To NCAAs
The Army women and Navy men secured automatic bids to the 2007 NCAA Tournament by winning their respective Patriot League Tournaments.

Army will be making its seventh appearance in the NCAA Women's Tournament as a Patriot League member and its third straight. The Black Knights will play at No. 14 Fresno State on Saturday, May 12 at 4 p.m. ET. The Bulldogs are the lowest seed the Black Knights have ever faced.

Navy is appearing in just its second NCAA Men's Tournament in Patriot League history and its first since 1999. The Mids will take on the No. 11 seed, Texas, on Friday, May 11 at 11 a.m. ET in Austin, Texas. The match will be the first-ever between the Mids and the Longhorns.

The Patriot League is in search of its first win in the NCAA Tournament for both the men and the women.

Award Winners
Three from Navy were honored with Patriot League Major Awards in men's tennis. Nate Nelms was the Player of the Year, Ramsey Lemaich was the Rookie of the Year and John Officer was named Coach of the Year.

The women's major awards will be announced once balloting is completed.

Team Notebook

Army women won their third-straight Patriot League Championship title on Monday, while the men were runners-up in the men's tourney. Niki Flach and Brooke Jones were named Co-MVPs of the tournament. Flach went 4-1 in singles and 5-0 in doubles during the month of April and tied the Army record for consecutive doubles victories with an active streak of 13. Eddie Kang went unbeaten during April with a 6-0 singles mark and 7-0 record in doubles action.

Bucknell women were the Patriot League Tournament runners-up, while the men advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament. Zach Hascoe posted a 13-6 record in April, going 6-3 in singles play and 7-3 in doubles action. Paulina Gamboa went 8-2 in singles competition, playing at the No. 2 spot for nine matches and once at No. 1, and notched a 5-3 mark in doubles action.

Colgate men reeled off seven-straight wins to kick off the month of April, including one against Lafayette in the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals. The Raiders' season came to an end in the semis of the men's tournament against No. 2 Army. The Colgate women posted a 4-2 record in April and fell to No. 3 Bucknell in the Patriot League Tournament. Marshall Wheeler posted a 7-1 singles record and 5-3 mark in doubles play last month. For the women, Cameron Thaney went 5-1 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles.

Holy Cross competed in both the men and women's Patriot League Tournaments for the first time since it was last a full-field event (2001). Kristen Meahl earned a win at No. 4 singles against Colgate on April 14.

Lafayette men went 2-4 in April, while the women posted a 3-3 record. The men were the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Men's Tournament and the women were the No. 4 seed, with both dropping matches in the opening rounds of their respective tourneys. Eric Wiley put together a streak of five-straight singles wins to open play in April and went 3-3 in doubles action. Danielle Bailey worked her way to the top singles and doubles spots during her senior season and recorded a win over Wagner on April 13.

Lehigh hosted the Patriot League Women's Tournament as the No. 5 seed and defeated archrival Lafayette in the quarterfinals, then fell to No. 1 Army in the semis. The Mountain Hawk men's team was the No. 5 seed in the men's tournament as well, dropping a match to No. 4 Bucknell in the opening round. Senior Alfredo Fernandez-Concha graduates Lehigh with 62 career wins, for most for any play in Head Coach Dave Shook's 18 years.

Navy won the Patriot League Men's Tennis Championship title and will face No. 11 Texas in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on May 11. The Mids were a perfect 5-0 in the month of April. Sophomore Nate Nelms was named the Patriot League Tournament MVP. Freshman Ramsey Lemaich was a combined 10-0 in the month of April, going 8-0 against Patriot League opponents and 4-0 in the Patriot League Tournament.
