May 12, 2008

Center Valley, Pa. - Army senior Eddie Kang was voted the Patriot League Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced on Monday by Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich. Kang is the third-overall Army men's tennis student-athlete in Patriot League history to win the prestigious award, and the second in the past three years. The scholar-athlete of the year award is voted on by the Patriot League men's tennis sports information directors.

Kang, an East Asian Studies major, has recorded a 3.34 cumulative GPA during his time at West Point. During the past year, he has posted a 3.54 grade point average to finish his career at Army. He has been nominated for the Army Athletic Association Award, which recognizes one male and one female for outstanding career achievement.

The senior from Glenview, Ill. leaves the Army men's tennis program as one of the successful cadets to ever pick up at racket. As the team captain this past season, Kang compiled an overall singles record of 18-4 at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles positions. He also teamed with junior Phil Muhawi to tally an overall doubles record of 16-7 at the No. 1 position. Kang was honored as the Patriot League Player of the Month twice this season, winning the award in February and April. For his career, Kang finishes as the career victories leader in singles play at Army, and becomes only the second Black Knight to finish his career with more than 60 singles victories and more than 50 doubles victories.

To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.

The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
