Center Valley, Pa. - Army junior Kevin Kumlien was voted the Patriot League Men's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced on Thursday by Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich. Kumlien becomes the fourth-overall Army outdoor track and field student-athlete in Patriot League history to win the prestigious award.
Kumlien, a management major with a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average, was a member of the 2007 Patriot League men's outdoor track and field Academic Honor Roll. The junior from Bozeman, Mont. has also posted a 3.89 GPA during the past year.
During the 2008 outdoor season, Kumlien was the top collegiate finisher in the javelin throw at every event in which he entered leading up to the Patriot League Championships. He won the University of South Florida Bulls Invitational with an IC4A-qualifying distance of 58.90m, and also won the Dick Shea Invite as well. He was second-overall and the top collegiate finisher at the highly-regarded Auburn Tiger Track Classic, and also captured the event at the annual Army-Navy Star Meet.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
