Easton, Pa. -- The first Patriot League Championship of the 2007-08 schedule took place earlier today in the sport of cross country. The weather was less than agreeable on Saturday morning at Lafayette's Metzgar Fields complex, as the rain poured down from the beginning of the men's race until the conclusion of the awards ceremony. The final results for both the men's and women's race were the closest in the history of the Patriot League

The American men's cross country team won their sixth consecutive Patriot League title by a single point over runner-up Navy. The Eagles had the top two finishers in the race, which combined with their other top runners gave them a score of 47, one ahead of the 48 posted by the Midshipmen. The six consecutive titles are a Patriot League record, and tie the Eagles with Bucknell and Army for the most titles in League history. The victory for the Eagles also marks the sixth consecutive Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year award for Head Coach Matt Centrowitz. Senior Brendan Fennell was named the Patriot League Outstanding Runner of the Meet for the second consecutive season, making him the sixth runner in Patriot League history to pull off the back-to-back feat. His time of 25:00.0 in the 8k race placed him 21 seconds ahead of his teammate, Steve Hallinan. Navy freshman Andrew Hanko was the 2007 Patriot League Outstanding Rookie of the Meet after his 16th-place finish, which was the top mark for Patriot League freshman.

The women's race produced the first co-champions in the history of Patriot League Cross Country. Bucknell and Navy's top-five finishers each combined for a score of 58 points. Under both Patriot League and NCAA rules, the result is a tie, allowing Bucknell to gain at least a share of the title for the third straight season. Navy earned at least a share of the title for the first time in program history. Colgate freshman Stacey Marion was named the Patriot League Outstanding Runner of the Meet and Rookie of the Meet for her first place finish. Marion posted a time of 20:53.70 in the 6k race, which was good enough to finish over 18 seconds ahead of American's Cathleen Ford, the second-place finisher. Navy women's Head Coach Karen Boyle was named the 2007 Patriot League Coach of the Year.

Fennell earned a spot on the First-Team All-Patriot League squad, and was joined by Hallinan, Army's John Mickowski, Navy's John Olsen, Navy's John Kress, Bucknell's Wallace Campbell and Lafayette's Alex Wechsler. Second-Team All-Patriot League honorees were Army's Jon Anderson and Rob Squier, Navy's Andrew Grant and William Prom, Colgate's Lyle Tolli, American's Carlos Jamieson and Bucknell's Clinton Orloski.

Joining Marion on the First-Team All-Patriot League was American's Ford and Kate Lilley, Lehigh's Shannon Alejandro, Colgate's Elizabeth Kennedy, Navy's Amy Watson and Bucknell's Erin Crammer-Hart. Second-Team All-Patriot League honorees included Bucknell's Christy Totten and Gillian Nordquist, Holy Cross's Caitlin Paluilis, Army's Stephanie Schoeneman, and the Navy trio of Kyleigh Millhouse, Arwyn Becker and Lexa Gass.

Next up for the Patriot League Cross Country teams will be the NCAA regional meets, which will take place on Nov. 10. Teams competing in the Mid-Atlantic Regional will travel to Bethlehem, Pa., while the Northeast Regional will be in Boston, Mass.
