EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Army guard Jarell Brown was named to the All-Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Second Team at the organization's annual awards dinner held at the Meadowlands on Thursday night. Brown earned third-team laurels in 2007, becoming only the fifth Black Knight to be an All-MBWA selection twice.
Brown was a first-team All-Patriot League pick after averaging a career-best 18.2 points per game during the 2007-08 season. He became the fifth Army player ever to record back-to-back seasons with at least 500 points. Brown set an Army record with four Patriot League Player of the Week selections, and is the only Black Knight ever to win the honor in consecutive weeks.
The Cleveland, Ohio, native ranked 17th in the nation with 3.37 three-pointers per game, the third-best mark in the Patriot League. Brown also ranked second in the league in scoring, fifth in steals (1.6), seventh in three-point percentage (40.1), ninth in field goal percentage (42.3), sixth in free throw percentage (80.0), and 20th in rebounding (3.9).
Brown established an Academy record with 101 three-pointers, breaking the old mark of 99 that had stood since 1996. He tied the Army record with nine triples against Brown on Jan. 2, and recorded three of the six highest single-game three-point totals in the Black Knights' record book.
Brown posted a career-high 13 games with at least 20 points in 2007-08, including four 30-point efforts. He became only the 10th Army player ever to have at least four 30-point games in a season and is one of only seven Black Knights to have at least five 30-point games in their career.
Brown's senior season capped a standout career. His 1,444 career points rank eighth on the Army career ledger and represent one of the top 25 scoring totals in Patriot League history. He ranks second on the Black Knights' career three-point list with 251 and is third on the three-point percentage list at 39.9. Brown's 94 career steals are tied for fifth best in Academy history.
One of Army's team captains, Brown led Army to a 14-16 overall record and a 6-8 mark in league play. The Black Knights were the fifth seed in the Patriot League Tournament, upsetting fourth-seeded Lehigh in the quarterfinals and advancing to the semis for the second straight season. The Black Knights tied their best ever Patriot League mark and their 29 victories during the last two seasons were the most for the program since 1977-78 and 1978-79.
