Center Valley, Pa. - Georgetown senior Kyle Van Fleet was voted the 2007 Patriot League Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday by Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich. The scholar-athlete of the year award is voted on by the Patriot League's football sports information directors.
Van Fleet carries a 3.65 cumulative grade-point average as a Business and Management major. He recently accepted a full-time position working in the derivatives group for Goldman Sachs Investment Banking Division in New York City. A Georgetown captain in 2007, Van Fleet is a semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy, better known as football's "Academic Heisman". He was also selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first-team. On campus, Van Fleet was a university leader for "Hoya Dreams", a program that partners Georgetown student-athletes with children in the pediatric wing of the Georgetown University Hospital. Van Fleet was named to the Patriot League's Academic Honor Roll in all three of his seasons from 2004-06.
Van Fleet had an excellent season on the field to earn Second-Team All-League honors at fullback/halfback. He had team-highs with 44 receptions, 478 yards and four receiving touchdowns, and also carried 54 times for 198 yards and another touchdown. He finished the season with 61.5 all-purpose yards per game. He put up a big performance against Patriot League champion Fordham with seven receptions for 72 yards. The Williamsport, Pa. native started his career at linebacker, played wide receiver in 2005 and 2006 and moved to fullback this year.
Van Fleet is the first Georgetown student-athlete to earn the Football Scholar-Athlete Award, and just the second to earn one of the Patriot League's major awards. The Hoyas joined the League as an associate member in football in 2001.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
