Four-time All-Patriot League golfer Charlie Waddell of Bucknell recorded an opening round score of one under 71 Thursday at the NCAA West Regional on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.
Waddell, who won the 2005 and 2006 Patriot League Golfer of the Year honor, recorded two birdies and one bogey during the first round, which was played at ASU's Karsten Golf Course (par-72, 7,057 yards). He is tied for 55th place.
Meanwhile, Bucknell tallied an 18-hole team score of 11 over 299 and stands in 26th position. This marks the second consecutive NCAA appearance for the Bison. UCLA leads the team competition with a score of 20 under par 268.
The 2007 Patriot League Rookie of the Year Andrew Cohen recorded a one under par 71, followed by teammates Kyle Moran (74), Brian Bartow (79) and All-Patriot League golfer Keith Aoki (87). Cohen earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors with his fourth-place tie at the Patriot League Championship, while Aoki received Second-Team All-Patriot League acclaim following his tie for sixth place.
The top 10 teams in the field of 27 will advance to the NCAA Championship, which starts May 30.
The second round of the tournament will be played Friday, and the final day of competition is Saturday.
