Patriot League Men's Soccer Academic Honor Roll
Center Valley, Pa. - Army's Daniel Newell was named the 2007 Patriot League Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and is one of 76 student-athletes named to this year's Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, announced Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich Thursday. Seven student-athletes achieved at least a 4.00 GPA for the fall academic term, including American's Chris Liebner, Army's Andrew Kydes, Bucknell's Sean King and Jason Soto, Lafayette's Matt Reichenbach and Navy's Evan Barnes and Chris Schneider.
Newell, an Engineering Management major with a 3.77 cumulative grade-point average, was a member of the 2006 National Soccer Coaches Association of America East Region All-Academic Team, and was also named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District I First-Team. The senior from Scottsdale, Ariz. is also an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American. Newell has also been appointed Deputy Brigade Commander during his time at the U.S. Military Academy, which serves as the second-highest cadet rank in the Brigade Chain of Command at West Point.
Newell is a three-time Second-Team All-Patriot League selection, and was also named the Co-Rookie of the Year following the 2004 season. The defenseman played and started in all 17 games this past season, and scored one goal. He was also the leader of an Army defense that held the opposition to a 0.96 goals against average this season including six shutouts.
To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the Patriot League's seven fall championship sports.
