Colgate, Lafayette Advance to Patriot League Men's Soccer Championship

Nov. 16, 2007

Worcester, Mass. -- Colgate and Lafayette advanced to Patriot League men's championship game following semifinal victories Friday Linda Johnson Smith Stadium on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross.

Colgate's Corey Curnette and Conor O'Brien both scored for Bucknell and Eric Anton and Dan Belke each connected for Colgate. Patrick Selwood missed the next chance as his shot hit the near post but Kuterbach stopped Steven Miller's kick. Chris Hennings lofted a high shot over the net and Colgate's Alex Weekes snuck his shot past Joey Kuterbach to take the 3-1 lead. Kuterbach was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year earlier this week. Colgate goalkeeper David Cappuccio came up with a big stop on Justin Wolf's chance to give Colgate the 3-2 penalty kick victory.

Anton, the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, gave Colgate an early 1-0 lead with a penalty kick in the third minute of the game. It marked the third time this season that Colgate has been awarded a penalty kick with Anton taking and scoring on all three opportunities. Junior Daniel Kerley had a run down the right flank and was taken down inside the 18-yard box by a Bucknell defender at 2:33.

Earlier this season, the Raiders edged the Bison, 2-1, in double overtime. In Friday's first semifinal, Lafayette's men's soccer team posted a pair of second-half goals to defeat Holy Cross, 2-1.

After a scoreless first half, in which Holy Cross outshot Lafayette, 9-5, Lafayette's Steve Ference scored an unassisted goal at 69:19 to give the Leopards (10-3-6) a 1-0 advantage.

Mark Price of Lafayette registered Lafayette' second goal at 83:26, on a goal which was assisted by Chip Aronica.

Holy Cross closed the gap to 2-1 with one minute and 20 seconds remaining in the contest on a penalty kick from Alejandro Melean.

Lafayette and Colgate square off in Sunday's championship game, which begins at 2 p.m. Lafayette will be looking to win its seventh Patriot League title, while Colgate has two previous Patriot League crowns (1992, 1997). The winner earns the Patriot League's automatic qualifier spot.
