Center Valley, Pa. - Lehigh junior Christy Smith was voted the Patriot League Women's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday by Patriot League Executive Director Carolyn Schlie Femovich. Smith earns the award for the second-consecutive year and is the fourth Lehigh women's lacrosse student-athlete in Patriot League history to win the prestigious award.
Smith, an industrial engineering major with a 3.89 cumulative grade-point average, is a multi-year member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. The senior from Downingtown, Pa. has been honored on the Dean's List at Lehigh multiple times during her stay in Bethlehem, Pa. Smith has also been recognized on several All-Academic Teams throughout her career, including the Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (LVAIAW) and the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team as well.
Smith was an integral part of Lehigh's women's lacrosse team on the field in 2008, starting 16 regular season games. She accrued totals of 21 goals, four assists and 25 points. Smith also had two game-winning goals, 45 groundballs, 25 draw controls and 10 caused turnovers this season. She scored at least one goal in 14 of 16 regular season games, including a season-high three goals against arch-rival Lafayette. Smith is also a standout field hockey player at Lehigh, as she was named 2007 Offensive Player of the Year in that sport.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
